To join the math community is to step into one of the world’s oldest sciences. But mathematical skills hold as much weight today as in all of history. Just think: You could be laying the foundations for mathematicians to build on centuries from now.
Whether you want to go into business, become a math teacher, or pursue a career in the sciences, our core curriculum will challenge and prepare you to become an integrated and analytical thinker.
As a mathematics and data analytics major, you will learn the mathematical theories, computational techniques, algorithms and computer technology needed to solve advanced engineering, economic, physics, scientific and business problems.
Business Analytics Certificate
Every mathematics and data analytics major earns a Business Analytics Certificate. The data skills gained from these courses are necessary in nearly every industry, including healthcare, education, the arts and more. Knowing how to collect, analyze and understand data is highly desirable to prospective employers.
Research Opportunities
George Fox is one of the 11 universities that receives funding for the Richter Scholars program, which supports independent student research projects conducted under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Recent projects included researching computational fluid dynamics and quantifying uncertainty in the financial market.
While not limited to the sciences, mathematics and data analytics students may apply to the program. Often, participants get the opportunity to present their research at regional conferences.
Award Winning
Mathematics and Data Analytics students have opportunities to compete in national competitions. In 2023, George Fox students earned the Outstanding Award in the SCUDEM VIII international math modeling competition. The team modeled stress and work efficiency for NASA and private astronauts to address issues from a previous private astronaut mission.

When it comes to math, perhaps you’ve heard these statements before:
Myth 1: All you can do with a math major is teach.
Myth 2: Math and data analytics is an extremely challenging major.
Here are the facts: Teaching is just one small aspect of the discipline! Our graduates have landed jobs as data analysts, mathematicians and actuaries, many of whom work for large corporate and government agencies. In fact, math is an in-demand skill for a variety of jobs.
And while the major is challenging, you will find support from faculty members who will take the time to know you and learn your strengths. You don’t have to be a “brilliant thinker” to be a math and data analytics major!

Career Outlook What’s After George Fox
The job outlook is excellent for mathematics and data analytics graduates. Career opportunities for mathematicians and statisticians are projected to grow a whopping 33% from 2022 to 2034, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics – making it one of the fastest growing occupations. Likewise, the demand for the actuarial sciences are projected to grow 30% in the same time period.
