Subject & Specialist Endorsements

School districts highly value teachers who have specialist endorsements on their licenses. To earn a specialist endorsement, students complete an additional four to eight courses (11-19 semester credit hours) over and above the coursework required for the MAT degree.

We offer two types of endorsements: subject endorsements and specialist endorsements.

Subject Endorsements

You may earn K-12 preliminary licensure with either a single-subject or multiple-subjects focus, depending on what level you wish to teach. You have the option of earning endorsements in K-12 multiple subjects (elementary) or in K-12 single subjects (middle school and high school).

You may choose up to TWO of the following subject-area endorsements:

  • Art
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Drama
  • English Language Arts
  • Health Education
  • Math - Basic
  • Math - Advanced
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Physics
  • Science - Integrated
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish

Specialist Endorsements

With our MAT Plus program, you can also earn a specialist endorsement credential at the same time you pursue preliminary teacher licensure.

Our MAT Plus program offers specialist endorsements in:

Specialist Endorsements Coursework

Students in the MAT Plus program take 11 additional credits online to earn an ESOL or Reading specialist endorsement along with their MAT degree.

Alternately, students can take an additional 19 credits online to earn a Special Education specialist endorsement in two additional semesters following completion of the core MAT program.

Note: MAT Plus students' per-credit tuition is the same throughout the program. Per-credit tuition is different for those who take the Reading, ESOL, or Special Education endorsement as a stand-alone option outside of the MAT Plus program.

MAT Plus ESOL Coursework

MAT Plus ESOL degree students take an additional four courses (11 semester credit hours) over and above the 36 semester credits required for the MAT degree. This coursework is delivered online using an interactive web-based system, allowing for thorough interaction between faculty and students.

The four ESOL courses are offered during the last four semesters of the MAT program, one course per semester. Full-time format students enrolled in the MAT Plus ESOL degree take their first ESOL course one month prior to the regular June start date.
